More Flowers of Spring

April 07, 2008 (1113 Comments)

With such mild winters here is Victoria BC we tend very few plants in our garden parish over the winter despite being left in the ground (Dahlias being an exception with the amount of rain we get). So every year it is always a delight to see what will come up in our garden, especially having just moved into this house last year at the end of April.

Unknown Flower

I'm not sure what this flower is, but this photo blew me away with the bright colours combined with all the droplets of water (unfortunately at such a small resolution the water droplets aren't visible). The stark brown garden really makes the pink jump out of the photo.

Finally The Flowers of Spring, Apple Blossoms

April 03, 2008 (1274 Comments)

I have never been one of those people that suffers from winter depression, or that feels out of place in the rain. However as a photographer it can sure suck living in Victoria with our constant rain, nearly permanent winter overcast, and ever blowing wind.

So every year when the flowers start to bloom I start taking my camera to work shooting to my hearts content. Mind you if your shooting spring flowers in Victoria make sure you that you have an Image Stabilized lens, or camera with built in image stabilization to compensate for the wind. Back when I started with digital photography and only had the lower end lenses I can't count how many photos that were ruined by the wind got the better of my subjects.

Apple Blossoms

I have always found it interesting with apple trees that the blossom comes first, and then the leaves come second the opposite of the spring plants.

Early Morning Salmon Fishing in March

March 02, 2008 (1078 Comments)

No matter what the weather is I'm always up for a fishing adventure. This morning I went out salmon fishing with my father off the Victoria waterfront. As always we launched from the military boat launch at Wark Point then headed up out of the harbor. As we are rarely there after the sunrise there are always photos a plenty to take with coloured light reflecting off of the water.

Victoria BC Breakwater

When fishing off of the Victoria waterfront you can either fish from the harbour entrance all the way down to Trial Island (quite often we will just go back and forth), or as we did today head straight out to Constance Bank (6 mile run). The benefit of fishing Constance Bank is your very likely to pickup a large number of feeder springs this time of year, and your less likely to pickup seals (the seals can be just terrible for stealing Salmon, we had 2 stolen in one day once)
