Scenic British Columbia, Vancouver Island Photography Blog

Welcome to Scenic British Columbia, A Vancouver Island Photography Blog

Please bare with me as this is still a relatively new project, and I have a ton of ideas for this site. As time goes by I will be adding more advanced features. I hope you enjoy the photos of my travels, and day to day life on Vancouver Island. Cheers, Daryl Quenet, Vancouver Island Photographer.

Salmon and Halibut Fishing in Ucluelet BC - Day 2

August 18, 2007 (0 Comments)

Today started out nice and early at 5am with a hot porridge for breakfast. The porridge was hardily excepted with rain having poured down overnight, and forbidding clouds above. We were out Island West Marina of the set off by around 5:39 am.

This morning we decided to start fishing on South Inner Bank along the contours for feeding Spring Salmon. It sadly was a rather slow morning but I managed to catch a 19 pounder Spring Salmon (Delicious, but nothing to write home about size wise). We also released tons of Wild Coho, as only the Hatchery Coho Salmon were open at the time. We ended up with 3 Springs, and a Coho.

Next we headed towards another bank that was around 5 miles away from Ucluelet to try for some Halibut. We spend around 3 1/2 hours fishing, but only managed to catch 3 Halibuts. I caught a super chicken Halibut weighting in at about 35 pounds (Male Halibut grow to a maximum of 35 pounds, after that only Female halibut get larger ranging up to 500 pounds!). We also caught 24 and 12 pound Halibut, and several massive dog fish (biggest was close to 5 feet). Dogfish are possibly the biggest nuisance when it comes to Halibut fishing, as your general fishing from 120 feet down to 300+ feet with 2 pound lead balls. Some days you can catch dozens, but after the first few you know its time to move!

View from Island West Resort's Eagle Nest Pub

This photo was taken from the Balcony at the Eagle Nest Pub, located at the Island West Marina in Ucluelet. I would have liked a more scenic photo, but fishing out on the banks 90% of the photos are just sky, and water.
