Welcome to Scenic British Columbia, A Vancouver Island Photography Blog
Please bare with me as this is still a relatively new project, and I have a ton of ideas for this site. As time goes by I will be adding more advanced features. I hope you enjoy the photos of my travels, and day to day life on Vancouver Island. Cheers, Daryl Quenet, Vancouver Island Photographer.
Whiffin Spit, Sooke - A Wedding on Friday the 13th
July 17, 2007 (467 Comments)
I'm not sure why so many brides rushed to get married on July 7th, 2007 (777) when obviously July 13th, 2007, Friday the 13th would have been way luckier... Well believe it or not I photographed just that in Sooke. From the onset I was wary of crossing a black cat while photographing the backyard wedding, but it went off without a hitch, well actually there was a hitch congratulations Cinnamon and Craig.
When photographing an outdoor wedding you don't get to set the time of the wedding to best suit the lighting, it usually best suits the bride. Lighting was a major concern at this wedding as it was early afternoon with the sun directly overhead, this bodes ill for white items mainly the brides dress, and bald family members in portraits. I'll definitely be spending some time in Photoshop repairing some shots, but with over 630 photos in total you can't win them all.

While not quite my favorite photo of the Whiffin Spit photos, this one had the best lighting. My favorite went of the bride and groom kissing with the US mountains in the background, however the sun was directly behind them casting a lot of shadows on their faces.
I've decided to break my rule of only having one photo per blog entry, so here is my favorite photo from the Whiffin Spit photoshoot. I also just noticed that there is a freighter in the distant background.

A View of Victoria from Mount Doug Park
July 10, 2007 (477 Comments)
Mount Doug has always been consider one of my favorite places to shoot Elevated photos around Victoria. If you manage to climb up to the summit you get a great view on all sides!
We drove up Mount Doug after having a hamburger dinner out. Sadly we were short on time so I only spent around 3 minutes taking photos from the parking area.

Seagull eating a Spider Crab at Dallas Road
July 06, 2007 (500 Comments)
Today was one of the last days working beside the ocean, before we move to our new office in Victoria. For lunch I once again grabbed some food at Thrifty Foods then headed down to the water. Just as I arrived I watched this seagull fly in with something in its mouth.
Very slowly I made my way down to the rocks where he was attempting to get his meal out of its shell, and saw it was a spider crab. I managed to take around dozen photos before he decided he didn't like my presence, and got distracted long enough for a crow to steal the spider crab.

I also snapped several photos of the crow enjoying his meal of spider crab.
Butterfly in my Garden

I found this beautiful butterfly perched on a tree in my background. Luckily he stayed around long enough for a few pictures.

Honey Bee Buzzing in my Garden
July 02, 2007 (426 Comments)
I was out in my garden this morning, when I Saw a pair of butterflies dancing in my garden, and I was without my camera. So I ran inside and managed to snap away a few shots, then I slowly moved around my garden looking for other shots. When I saw this honey bee dancing from flower to flower, I thought I would see what I could pull off. 30 Photos later, I managed several beautiful shots, and one stunning shot. Enjoy.
Happy Canada Day, and Scenic British Columbia Official Launch!!
July 01, 2007 (515 Comments)
After a lot of hard work, I'm finally ready to announce the website is ready for launch. I'd like to thank everyone who has given me feedback up to this point, and I definitely would like even more.
As time goes by I will be both back BLOGGING, and filling the site out with more content. Phase two should be ready around September. Cheers.

Everyone celebrates Canada Day differently, I found this guy playing his bag pipes at the Jordan River Campground operated by Western Forest Products. My parents love spend several weeks a year camping in their trailer in Jordan River. It hosts a unique view tucked away between Sooke and Port Renfrew. And a strategic place to camp to be within driving distance of Port Renfrew, French Beach, China Beach, Muir Creek, and my favorite Botanical Beach Provincial Park.
You can see last years Photo Gallery of Jordan River Here. Sadly the weather was overcast and very windy this year, so I didn't get many stellar photos.
