Welcome to Scenic British Columbia, A Vancouver Island Photography Blog
Please bare with me as this is still a relatively new project, and I have a ton of ideas for this site. As time goes by I will be adding more advanced features. I hope you enjoy the photos of my travels, and day to day life on Vancouver Island. Cheers, Daryl Quenet, Vancouver Island Photographer.
Poisonous Climbing Nightshade Berries
October 13, 2007 (2 Comments)
As a parent of young babies who are partial to eating shiny colourful things poison berries can be any parents nightmare. One of the most common plants to watch out for is the Climbing Nightshade. It's scientific name is Solanum dulcamara, and is commonly called deadly nightshade, climbing nightshade, European bittersweet.
True to their name climbing nightshade will commonly be found growing within hedges, or anywhere it can find perch to climb against.

I frequent Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary near Victoria, BC, 2 to 3 times a week traversing the round the lake "Loop" walk. Something nearly always happens to make this a rewarding experience. Today (Aug 25th 2008) I came across a 50+ guy tasting some attractive red berries which he was spitting out because, he said, they tasted bitter and generally unpleasant. I recognised them as Deadly Nightshade exactly as depicted in your photograph and recommended he spit out as much as possible !!
